Metal Fireplaces And Doors Can Be A Good Bet

With so many customized designs of fireplace accessories, fireplace doors and fireplaces, there have been varied debates as to which one would be the best one to have. There can be no definite answer to that simply because, every household have their own distinct styles and tastes. However though, one type of fireplace that has gained more preference among many households is the metal fireplace. Most of these fireplaces come in a prefabricated state. Hence, if one prefers to have a metal one be installed, then dimension of the area where it has to be placed has to be taken. It would not take much time and effort to do such. Most of these metal type fireplaces are made of cast iron. These irons have been known to withstand the tests of time and are highly durable. Cast iron metals have been used in a wide array of heating applications at home such as in a patio heater assembly. In terms of sturdiness, the metal fireplaces’ close competitors are their brick or concrete counterparts. These brick fireplaces are also durable. However though, they tend to get brittle over time especially during repeated exposure to varying degrees of heat.

A noted advantage of cast iron fireplaces, aside from being durable, is their classical looks. Fireplace Glass Doors – The Elegant Solution

Glass products have been among the elegantly designed things in a wide variety of consumer items especially those made up of high-quality glass. You can find them in numerous dinnerware items, windows and almost any other place you can think of. Consequently, glass materials can be found as the basic material used in the making of fireplace doors. However, the types of glass used in these doors are usually of the ceramic and tempered types which are high-heat resistant. Fireplace glass doors are designed is such a way that it adds a noticeable tinge of elegance into the fireplace that is why they have found their way into thousands of fireplaces across different homes and hotels.

As mentioned earlier, a fireplace glass door is something that is made up of a special kind of glass able to endure varying degrees of heat. Ordinary glass will break, crack or even shatter when subjected to high amounts of heat such as those present in burning fireplaces. With this in mind, manufacturers have utilized special glasses akin to those used in laboratory glassware and in some glass cookware. Tempered glass and ceramic glass fireplace doors are the common types being installed at various fireplaces. Both types have similar capabilities when it comes to heat resistance. However, they differ in some aspects though. For one, tempered glass tends to prevent heat from passing through it while ceramic glass tends to let some heat pass through.

When it comes to buying a fireplace door, which type to be used highly depends on the whims of the consumer because there are no huge advantages of using one type over the other. That is, it will come down to whichever type of glass doors you choose depending on your taste. Both have proven to be useful and are available in elegant styles and designs that can cater to different tastes. When it comes to their prices, it would depend on the design and style. Not much difference have been noted in general.

Even though these two types of glass doors for the fireplace can provide a tinge of elegance and style to the fireplace, there are two simple precautions that must be observed when the fireplace is active. Firstly, you cannot determine visually if a glass panel is hot or cold. You can only determine its temperature by touching it or by using a thermal gauge such as a thermometer. Hence, a hot glass will look like a cold glass anytime and anyway you will look at it. With this, one has to exercise due caution especially when kids and toddlers are around. You must advise them against going near the glass doors of the fireplace to prevent burns and scalding. Secondly, many homeowners tend to close the glass fireplace door when the fireplace is burning. This is an unsafe practice. These doors should be open when the fireplace and burning much like they should be closed when the fireplace is not burning. Keep in mind that a fireplace door is primarily used to prevent room heat from escaping into the chimney. There are quite many instances where the glass doors exploded (well, not really exploded as in a boom), because of the buildup of heated gases behind the glass door. Even if these glass doors are resistant to heat, they will become brittle as a result of years of use.

Can We Use Both A Fireplace Door And A Fireplace Screen?

The answer to this question will depend on some things and can be best addressed if we get to know the difference between the two. The term fireplace doors and fireplace screens are two most interchangeably used terms when relating to fireplaces. Some may refer to screens but they are actually talking about doors much like some may be referring to fireplace doors but they are actually talking about the screens. Hence, it would be helpful if we briefly tackle the respective function of these two fireplace accessories. On a side note, there are many houses that have been using both for their fireplaces. Using either one of these two can be appropriate for most fireplaces depending on what you want to achieve. But having the two installed on fireplaces can definitely have some advantage.

As we have already mentioned before, a fireplace door serves one main function. They are installed not as protective covers but only to preserve the warmth or the coolness of the room. During the cold months when the fireplace is in use, that door prevents heat from escaping out into the chimney. Without a door, the heat accumulated inside the room will dissipate towards the outside via the chimney route and hence, waste the heat energy which could have been used to comfortably warm the room. Furthermore, during the hot summer months when air-conditioning is most likely used, the cool air inside the room will dissipate outside via the chimney if no fireplace door is installed. With this function, we can already see why a door needs to be installed in the fireplace.

On the other hand, fireplace screens are used as protective covers. As we all know, screens are mesh-type installations which are used to prevent something (i.e. insects), with the exception of air or wind, from passing through. Even with a mesh of a fine type is being used, air will still pass through. That being said, fireplace screens are actually used to prevent burning embers or sparks from splashing into the living room where they can burn or damage something such as your first class carpet. Hence, when the fireplace is burning, these screens are then closed as opposed to doors which have to be opened.

By their primary functions alone, we can already determine which one can be used for a particular purpose. If one prefers to conserve energy, then a fireplace door would be appropriate. On the other hand, if one prefers to put emphasis on safety without giving much weight on preserving energy, then a fireplace screen would be appropriate. Whichever you choose, the fireplace can be transformed into one nice place to look at in the living room and can be the superstar thereat. However, for those who have the budget and inclination to have the best of both worlds, why not use both?
