Fireplace Glass Doors – The Elegant Solution

Glass products have been among the elegantly designed things in a wide variety of consumer items especially those made up of high-quality glass. You can find them in numerous dinnerware items, windows and almost any other place you can think of. Consequently, glass materials can be found as the basic material used in the making of fireplace doors. However, the types of glass used in these doors are usually of the ceramic and tempered types which are high-heat resistant. Fireplace glass doors are designed is such a way that it adds a noticeable tinge of elegance into the fireplace that is why they have found their way into thousands of fireplaces across different homes and hotels.

As mentioned earlier, a fireplace glass door is something that is made up of a special kind of glass able to endure varying degrees of heat. Ordinary glass will break, crack or even shatter when subjected to high amounts of heat such as those present in burning fireplaces. With this in mind, manufacturers have utilized special glasses akin to those used in laboratory glassware and in some glass cookware. Tempered glass and ceramic glass fireplace doors are the common types being installed at various fireplaces. Both types have similar capabilities when it comes to heat resistance. However, they differ in some aspects though. For one, tempered glass tends to prevent heat from passing through it while ceramic glass tends to let some heat pass through.

When it comes to buying a fireplace door, which type to be used highly depends on the whims of the consumer because there are no huge advantages of using one type over the other. That is, it will come down to whichever type of glass doors you choose depending on your taste. Both have proven to be useful and are available in elegant styles and designs that can cater to different tastes. When it comes to their prices, it would depend on the design and style. Not much difference have been noted in general.

Even though these two types of glass doors for the fireplace can provide a tinge of elegance and style to the fireplace, there are two simple precautions that must be observed when the fireplace is active. Firstly, you cannot determine visually if a glass panel is hot or cold. You can only determine its temperature by touching it or by using a thermal gauge such as a thermometer. Hence, a hot glass will look like a cold glass anytime and anyway you will look at it. With this, one has to exercise due caution especially when kids and toddlers are around. You must advise them against going near the glass doors of the fireplace to prevent burns and scalding. Secondly, many homeowners tend to close the glass fireplace door when the fireplace is burning. This is an unsafe practice. These doors should be open when the fireplace and burning much like they should be closed when the fireplace is not burning. Keep in mind that a fireplace door is primarily used to prevent room heat from escaping into the chimney. There are quite many instances where the glass doors exploded (well, not really exploded as in a boom), because of the buildup of heated gases behind the glass door. Even if these glass doors are resistant to heat, they will become brittle as a result of years of use.
